Why Travel Vaccines are Important? Mint Staff Share their Story.

Traveling can be one of the most fulfilling things in life, but many people don’t recognize the dangers of it.

Whether you’re traveling for leisure or traveling for business, travelling to almost any part of the world carries its own health risks. That’s why it’s so important to seek professional advice from a healthcare professional.

While it’s true that any prescribing pharmacist or doctor could provide travel vaccines, seeing a healthcare professional that is a certified travel health practitioner to ensure you are receiving the best recommendations for your individual itinerary.

Mint’s Personal Story

Unfortunately, sometimes travellers forget or intentionally choose to forgo travel health advice before their travel without fully understanding the risks.

At Mint, one of the most unforgettable moments that comes to mind was when a traveller had come in for a travel health consultation requesting a specific, more rare type of vaccine.  He was travelling to Thailand to visit his friend who was on life support. Unfortunately, his friend had travelled to Thailand without receiving travel health advice or vaccines and picked up a rare viral disease from a mosquito called Japanese Encephalitis.

Japanese Encephalitis is a virus closely related to the West Nile virus. People that get infected with Japanese Encephalitis often start off with flu-like symptoms such as fever, vomiting and headache.

These symptoms progress very quickly as the virus begins to infect parts of the brain and the nerves which results in more severe symptoms like generalized weakness and movement disorders that resemble what you would see in Parkinson’s disease. Unfortunately, 30-50% of people that survive the infection end up with long-term complications that affect their cognition, nerves, and mental health status.

The friend was devastated and rushing to get to Thailand to see him, but understood the importance of protecting himself by taking necessary precautions before going, such as getting the proper vaccinations, and adhering to tailored precautionary measures provided by a healthcare provider for his specific itinerary.
